Chennai:

A group of Indian fishermen were attacked allegedly by Sri Lankan Navy personnel for allegedly trespassing into the island nation’s territorial waters.

One of the fishermen has been injured.

The fishermen have denied that they trespassed into Lankan waters. Stones were allegedly thrown and their nets were torn.

Authorities said there is no formal complaint yet and that they are investigating the incident.

The injured fisherman is from Tamil Nadu’s Rameswaram.

Tamil Nadu has in the pastraised with the centre the issue of harassment of fishermen from the state by Lankan authorities and has urged New Delhi to do more to put an end to harassment of Indian fishermen who may cross over into territorial waters in the Indian Ocean.
